                 Artist’s Statement

My work has been a process of discovery.
I continually discover that painting is vital to my life…

It is who I am… I cannot exist without creating…

And as I paint, I learn so much
About nature, about life, about myself…

My focus has been on light…
The soft gentle light that drifts softly down through fall leaves
Or the garish and harsh light of looking into the sun
And painting a bleached out field with deer
Standing out along the edge of trees.

Light has also been a major theme
For me philosophically and spiritually.
And that Light can only be clearly defined by exploring darkness…
Darkness within myself and within others.
I find that the exploration… the struggle is everything… and that Light fills all darkness.

I have spent time painting people, Seascapes, abstracts and landscapes.
Each of these areas has led me into deep personal discovery.
The most revealing have been the abstracts because they
Explore my emotional development… my emotional growth and pain.

I have done a large amount of realistic pieces.
These realistic pieces have been a struggle to express
A point of view and develop a color pallet that is somewhat extraordinary as I
explore the light within the individual
Or within the space… a Presence that is clear and strong…

I watch the light change across a surface and then realize that light is always
changing…
growing and turning into a presence that is unmistakable and profound.
Light reveals… light defines… Light fills and fulfills all subjects… It certainly fills me.
